An increasing number of melanoma diagnoses are being observed in many parts of the world. About 160 000 cases of melanoma are reported yearly.

Moreover, statistics show that melanoma is increasingly affecting younger individuals. As for all deadly diseases, the earlier they are detected, the greater is the chance of survival. Dermatoscopy is an essential tool for examining key morphological structures of skin lesions. These structures are normally in the epidermis and upper dermis and therefore not easily detected by the naked eye.
